Vonyarcvashegy

is a popular holiday resort on the northwest shore of Lake Balaton, 6 km away from Keszthely, the "capital" of the lake. It originated from Vonyarc /settlement of wine-growers/ and Vashegy /iron hill/, which were united in 1846, since then the village has been called Vonyarcvashegy. In 1960 it had 1000 constant inhabitants and now about 1800. Earlier the inhabitants earned their living by agriculture, fishing and winegrow- ing /today some wine-growers with the old reputation live here/,but nowadays the people of Vonyarcvashegy are closely connected to tourism, their life changed for ever. The LIDO of Vonyarcvashegy is one of the most frequently visited beaches in this area. Even families with children have a wide choice in leisure activities: they can try themselves in wind surfing /we have also surf-schools/, sailing, kayaking or water skiing. The sandy beach is very popular for adults and also for children in high terms.

Moreover, a wide selection of activities awaits people looking for lighthearted pastime and recreation: tennis, bowling, billiards, music- and folklore programs /for example in the former Festetics wine-cellar,it has a classiciste building/ or on the open-air stage. In the summer time we have an oper-air cinema,a disco, several bars, restaurants, places of amusement with live music, periodical exhibitions of visual arts or wine festivals. You can explore the local forests on marked hiking paths, discover look-out towers, springs on the hills, picnic areas and you can bike around Lake Balaton on the brand -new bicycle road, which leads along picturesque parts of Vonyarcvashegy. At the foot of St.Michael's Hill a covered picnic area welcomes the weary tourists. The marvellous Balaton landscape includes a hill standing alone on the shore /former an island/,the matchless view of which is truly unforgettable. This very spot is mentioned in lots of legends and stories: age-old, unwritten tales have mentioned a castle, hermits and fishermen, who had escaped thunderstorms and the icy depth of the lake and had built the chapel on the hilltop out of gratitude for archangel Michael. Every year on the 40 fishermen anniversary day /in August/ the locals commemorate the events of the past and also express their respect towards the fishermen of Lake Balaton.
